PHS Band Director Ryan Smith Receives Award


Perry Local Schools is proud to announce that Perry High School Director of Bands Ryan Smith is the 2026 recipient of The University of Akron School of Music Distinguished Music Educator Alumni Award. The award honors a University of Akron School of Music graduate whose professional work demonstrates excellence in teaching, leadership, and service to the profession. Smith is specifically recognized for his commitment to mentoring future music educators through his work as a cooperating teacher for student teachers and field experience students. “Ryan Smith is such a strong advocate for and proponent of music education," said Superintendent Nate Stutz. “This award affirms what we at Perry have long known. He is deeply committed to his students, their growth, and inspiring the next generation of music educators. He leads a department that values musical excellence while fostering creativity, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.” A 1999 graduate of The University of Akron, Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and completed his master’s degree in 2002. Since joining Perry Local Schools in 2010, Smith has developed a band program known for high expectations and strong student engagement. He directs the Panther Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, and Jazz Ensemble, and also supports band programs at the middle school level. An accomplished saxophonist, Smith continues to perform with professional ensembles and nationally recognized artists. Beyond Perry Local Schools, Smith remains active in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA), which advocates for high-quality music instruction delivered by licensed educators through comprehensive school music programs. He currently serves as OMEA Band Affairs chair and regularly adjudicates solo and ensemble, band, and marching band events. Smith will be recognized during the School of Music Alumni and Friends Reception, held in conjunction with the OMEA Conference, on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at 6:15 p.m. in Columbus.
